Aaron Gasch Burnett is Senior Fellow at the Centre for Strategic Statecraft, where he focuses on economic security, Canada-Europe relations, NATO and Arctic geopolitics. A German-Canadian dual national, Aaron recently returned to his native western Canada after 15 years in Europe, during which time he co-founded the Democratic Strategy Initiative and led the economic statecraft work of the European Resilience Initiative Center.
Aaron has advised ministers, senior parliamentarians, diplomats, and civil society on sanctions policy and economic security, helping to drive both geostrategic debates and concrete sanctions policy changes in Canada, Germany, the UK, and wider Europe.
A trained journalist and experienced communicator, Aaron’s commentary has been published by The Globe and Mail, The Toronto Star, The Spectator, The New Statesman, The Hub Canada, Macdonald-Laurier Institute, Canadian International Council, Ireland’s Business Post, and more. He has appeared as an expert guest for Germany’s Bild, ntv, ABC News Australia, and Monocle Radio, among others.
Aaron also regularly organizes, speaks at, and moderates events at international security conferences around Europe and Canada and has a passion for podcasting in particular, co-founding and co-hosting the successful BerlinsideOut podcast at the German Council on Foreign Relations.
Aaron holds degrees in Journalism, Public Policy, and International Security from the University of King’s College in Halifax, Hertie School of Governance in Berlin, and King’s College London, respectively.
