Sanjay Ruparelia

Sanjay Ruparelia is Professor of Politics at Toronto Metropolitan University, where he holds the Jarislowsky Democracy Chair, and a Senior Fellow of the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada. His books include Divided We Govern: Coalition Politics in Modern India; The Indian Ideology, and Understanding India’s New Political Economy. Sanjay serves as a co-chair of Participedia, an international network studying democratic innovations, and on the editorial boards of Asian Perspective, Indian Politics & Policy and Pacific Affairs. He co-hosts On the Frontlines of Democracy, a podcast-lecture series, and regularly contributes to media in Asia, Europe and North America. Sanjay previously taught at the New School for Social Research and Columbia University, and consulted for the United Nations in New York and Geneva and the Asia Foundation in Kabul. He earned his B.A. from McGill University, and M.Phil and Ph.D from the University of Cambridge, and held visiting fellowships at the American Council of Learned Societies, Notre Dame, Princeton, Social Science Research Council, Stellenbosch and Yale. His current research analyzes democratic backsliding in global perspective and the transformations of India and China in the twenty-first century.
