Alex Dalziel

Alex Dalziel is the Centre for Strategic Statecraft’s senior fellow on Arctic geopolitics. His work fuses a resume of extensive government experience and civil society activity in Canadian strategy on the global stage. He spent over two decades at the analyst and executive levels in Canada’s national security, intelligence and foreign policy community at, among others, the Privy Council Office and Canada Border Services Agency. Since 2023, he has been active as in civil society, researching and speaking as a senior fellow at the Macdonald-Laurier Institute and the Montreal Institute for Global Security. Highlights of his international resume include living, studying and working in Finland, Latvia, Germany, the United States, and Ukraine, as well as a diverse portfolio of experiences working with Canada’s NATO allies and Asia-Pacific partners. Over the course of his studies and travels, he developed language skills in Russian, Finnish and French.

Alex applies this background and skill set to specialize on Arctic geopolitics, having published extensively on Russian grand strategy in the Arctic, Nordic defence and security, and Greenland, with an eye to the threats, risks and opportunities presented to Canada. His interests focus on the intersections of information, economy and security, as well as the interconnections of the Arctic to Canada’s defence and security on the North American continent and Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. He also writes and speaks on Canada’s broader geopolitical and security role in the world and the relationship of intelligence, national security, hybrid warfare, and economic security in contemporary global security.

He holds a BA (Hons) and MA in History from Memorial University of Newfoundland and Labrador, as well as certificates in Russia and Baltic Area Studies from the University of Eastern Finland and in European Studies from the University of Bonn.
